Handling Complex and Difficult Federal Crimes Charges

Federal prosecutors are notoriously aggressive and determined. Federal charges, on average, bring more serious penalties than similar state crimes. I am attorney James Patton, and from a Livingston, New Jersey, law office I represent clients from Essex County and surrounding areas who have been charged with a federal crime.

I've handled complex charges of fraud, bribery, criminal enterprises, drug trafficking, conspiracies and murder. As a criminal defense attorney and trial lawyer with more than 30 years of experience, I have the ability to anticipate prosecution strategies and plan rebuttals for them. I am a former prosecutor myself, so I have in-depth knowledge of how they build cases.

Notable case: I obtained an acquittal at trial for a client in federal court for international drug conspiracy charges. All other defendants were convicted.

My Approach to Federal Criminal Defense

Federal prosecutors are highly trained and skilled. In order to prevail over them, your defense attorney needs to be more knowledgeable, more creative, more savvy and more skilled. I have the experience you need to mount an aggressive defense. I work hard to minimize the consequences my clients face, and I proactively seek reductions in charges, dismissals or plea bargains whenever possible. Should negotiations fail, however, I am more than ready to go to trial. My skill in the courtroom has led to the New Jersey Supreme Court designating me as a certified criminal trial attorney. My approach to federal criminal defense is:

  • Immediately investigate the circumstances of the alleged illegal activity
  • Gather any and all relevant evidence
  • Research applicable laws
  • Investigate the background of government witnesses and informants, as well as any plea bargains given to them in exchange for testimony
  • Check for Constitutional violations that may lead to the suppression of evidence or dismissal of charges
  • Anticipate prosecution strategies and work to rebut them

I offer a free initial consultation to all prospective clients, and accept evening and weekend appointments as needed. Call me at 973-577-7180 or send an e-mail to learn more about me and to discuss your situation.
